Founded in 1799, Greene King celebrated its 200th Birthday in 1999. It uses traditional brewing methods and draws water from the chalk wells sunk deep beneath the brewing house. It aims to become the leading brewer/pub retailer in the south. It currently has a 4.5% share of the cask ale market, with sales of Abbot Ale and IPA continuing to increase. Anew cask beer, Triumph Ale was introduced in 1999. 1,140 pubs are owned all serving cask conditioned beer, though many have cask breathers in the cellars. 3,000 free trade outlets are supplied direct.
