Charles Wells Ltd

The Eagle Brewery, Havelock Street, Bedford, MK40 4LU, Tel (01234) 272766

The largest, independent family owned brewery in the country established in 1876 and still run by descendants of the founder. The brewery has been on this site since 1976 and 290 of its 300 pubs serve cask ale, although about 50% use cask breathers. Wells also supplies around 600 other outlets direct. A bottling line was added in 1996. Its export market of 23 countries earned it a Queen's award for export in 1997. Seasonal ales: Josephine Grimbley (OG 1041, ABV 4.1%)

Eagle IPA (OG 1035, ABV 3.6%)
A refreshing, copper-amber session bitter with a well-defined citrus hop aroma and taste and a nutty, malty background ending dry.
Bombardier Premium Bitter (OG 1042, ABV 4.3%)
Gentle citrus hop is balanced by traces of malt in the mouth, and this pale brown best bitter ends with lasting dryness. Sulphur often dominates the aroma, particularly wit younger casks.
Fargo (OG 1050, ABV 5%)
A winter beer to search for. Hops, fruit and sulphur are prominent on the nose, followed by a bitter, citrus fruit flavour with a little malt to add a slight sweetness. Hops and fruit in the long, dry finish.
